About the Opening Piece

Nuwa is the creation goddess of ancient Chinese mythology, bearer of the age-old legends that opened the heavens and the earth, brought living things into being, and smelted stones to mend the sky.

As the opening piece of the evening, Nuwa begins the mythological chapter through dance. It speaks of the first stirrings of all things and the birth of life, and carries the Chinese people’s profound imagination of heaven and earth, of being alive, and of a beautiful future.

On the Zen Realm 2026 stage, this opening dance drew its body language from Chinese martial arts, classical dance and folk dance, setting the tone for an evening that moved from legend to the living stage.

On October 10, 2026, Alina Tu, a member of Vancouver Youth Dancing Club, performed in Nuwa (女娲), the opening act of Zen Realm 2026 (禅境界), a large-scale original stage production and charitable gala held at River Rock Theatre in Richmond, British Columbia.

Organized by Xing Wu Zen Temple Society, Zen Realm celebrated its fifth consecutive year of bringing together Chinese traditional culture, performing arts, and charitable giving. The event welcomed more than 300 guests for an evening featuring artistic performances, guest speeches, award presentations, and charitable donations.

Inspired by Chinese mythology and traditional art, this year's production drew on cultural treasures such as the legend of Nuwa repairing the heavens and the artistic heritage of the Dunhuang murals. Through a combination of Chinese martial arts, classical dance, and folk dance, the production presented the beauty and depth of Chinese culture, blending strength, grace, and Zen-inspired philosophy.

As the opening performance, Nuwa introduced audiences to the rich imagination of Chinese mythology and the enduring legacy of Chinese artistic traditions. Alina's participation offered an opportunity to share Chinese dance with the wider community and contribute to a cultural event that celebrates artistic expression and heritage.

Beyond its artistic significance, Zen Realm also carried an important charitable mission. Funds raised through the event will support the construction of Xing Wu Zen Temple, with a portion of the net proceeds donated to the Richmond Hospital Foundation. The gala demonstrated how cultural arts can bring people together in support of meaningful community initiatives.

Vancouver Youth Dancing Club is proud to see its members participate in cultural and artistic events throughout the community. We believe that dance serves not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a bridge between cultures and generations. Through opportunities such as Zen Realm, young dancers can deepen their appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage, develop their performance experience, and share the beauty of Chinese dance with diverse audiences.

Alina Tu's participation reflects the importance of providing young performers with opportunities to engage with the broader arts community and contribute to the continued appreciation and transmission of Chinese traditional culture.
